Camouflage is the use of any combination of materials, coloration or illumination for concealment, either by making animals or objects hard to see (crypsis), or by disguising them as something else (mimesis).
In ancient Greece, Aristotle (384 BC – 322 BC) already commented on the colour-changing abilities, both for camouflage and for signalling, of cephalopods, including the octopus, in his “Historia animalium”.
